project background

„Kharnatsang music“ is a musical collaboration that emerged from a yearlong cultural and academic exchange between me and the monastic musician and scholar Dawa Namgyal Kharnatsang at Menri Monastery in the Tibetan settlement of Dholanji in India. The exchange was first financed by my position as a composer and artistic researcher at the institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media (ICEM) at Folkwang University of the Arts, Germany starting in 2016. It later turned into ethnomusicological fieldwork funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), starting in 2019. The fieldwork was initially planned for a stay of one year but was prolonged by the pandemic another nine month more.
The theoretical and ethnomusicological results can be read in my publication „Learning from a Monastic Musician.“
See also my article on the „Sacred Recitation of the Tibetan Yungdrung Bön Tradition“ in which I explore the background of our musical collaboration in relation to the musical heritage of Yungdrung Bön and its role in monastic training.
